A dog that slips onto the couch during a thunderstorm, a cat that decides the sofa is the new litter tray, a puppy that has not quite mastered toilet training. Pet accidents on upholstery are one of the most common callouts we receive, and they are also one of the most time-sensitive. Unlike water spills, pet urine and vomit contain proteins, bacteria and hormones that bond to fibres within minutes and get more difficult to remove with every passing hour.
The First Five Minutes Matter Most
Whatever your pet has done, your first move is the same. Grab clean white towels or kitchen paper and blot. Apply steady pressure to lift as much liquid as possible. Do not rub. Do not use coloured cloths, which can bleed dye into the fabric. For vomit or solid waste, scoop the bulk off with a spoon or plastic scraper before blotting.
Once the surface is as dry as you can make it, resist the urge to grab the nearest cleaning spray. Ordinary household cleaners, especially ammonia-based ones, actually smell like urine to animals and encourage them to re-mark the same spot.
Urine Removal for Fabric Sofas
For fabric, use this sequence after blotting:
- Mix one cup of cool water with half a cup of white vinegar and two tablespoons of baking soda. Apply with a spray bottle until damp, not soaked.
- Let sit for 10 to 15 minutes. The baking soda will fizz as it neutralises alkaline salts in the urine.
- Blot again with clean towels until no more liquid comes up.
- Apply a pet-specific enzyme cleaner according to the label. Enzymes are the only household product that actually digests uric acid crystals, which are what create the lingering smell.
- Let the enzyme cleaner air-dry. Do not blot or rinse, because drying time is when the enzymes do their work.
- Place a fan nearby to speed evaporation and prevent mould in humid conditions.
Urine Removal for Leather Sofas
Leather is less absorbent but more delicate. After blotting:
- Wipe the area with a cloth dampened in distilled water only. Avoid vinegar, which etches the finish.
- Apply a small amount of pH-neutral leather cleaner on a soft cloth and wipe in small circles.
- Dry thoroughly, then apply a leather conditioner to restore moisture lost during cleaning.
- Never soak leather. If urine has reached the stitching or cushion core, book a professional service rather than attempting DIY.
Dealing with Vomit and Hair
Pet vomit often contains stomach acid that bleaches fabric and leather, so time is critical. Scoop, blot, then treat with the enzyme method above. For hair, vacuum weekly using an upholstery brush. For stubborn embedded hair, drag a slightly damp rubber glove across the fabric in one direction. Hair balls up and lifts off in seconds.
Eliminating the Odour for Good
Surface treatment is only the first layer. Urine frequently soaks through fabric into the cushion foam and frame, where home methods cannot reach. If the smell returns on humid days, the contamination is in the foam. Professional sofa cleaning uses commercial enzyme injection and hot-water extraction that reach the core and pull the contamination back out. The same equipment is effective on mattresses if your pet also visited the bed.
Preventing the Next Accident
Once the sofa is clean, protect your investment. Use washable sofa throws that can be hot-washed weekly. Train pets to sleep on their own bedding placed next to the sofa. Provide regular bathroom breaks to reduce accident risk, and address the cause if marking is behavioural rather than medical. For cats, adding a second litter tray often solves territorial marking on furniture, and for anxious dogs a vet check should rule out urinary-tract issues before assuming it is purely behavioural. Applying a pet-safe repellent spray to the sofa reinforces the boundary once the area has been thoroughly cleaned and neutralised, because a trace of residual odour can encourage repeat incidents even weeks after you think the problem is solved.
