Singapore experiences two monsoon seasons — the northeast monsoon (November to January) and the southwest monsoon (June to September) — bringing extended periods of heavy rainfall, elevated humidity, and reduced sunlight. For your sofa, these months represent the highest risk period for moisture damage: mould growth, musty odour, fabric weakening, and foam deterioration. The good news is that targeted precautions can protect your sofa through even the worst monsoon spells.
How Monsoon Conditions Damage Sofas
During Singapore’s monsoon months, outdoor humidity regularly exceeds 90%. Even with air-conditioning running, indoor humidity in a typical HDB flat or condo will rise significantly — particularly in rooms where the aircon is off while you are away at work. Sofa upholstery acts like a sponge: fabric and foam absorb airborne moisture gradually over days and weeks.
The consequences are progressive. In the early stages, you may notice a faint musty smell developing — this is the first sign of bacterial activity in a damp fabric. Left unaddressed, mould spores present in the indoor air (invisible but always present) begin to colonise the fabric surface, particularly in areas with less airflow, such as the crevices between cushions, the back of the sofa against the wall, and the underside near the floor. Advanced mould damage appears as visible grey, green, or black spots and causes permanent fabric discolouration.
Beyond mould, sustained high humidity accelerates the degradation of foam padding inside the sofa. Polyurethane foam that remains damp over extended periods loses its structural integrity, becoming brittle and crumbling rather than springing back. This process cannot be reversed once it has occurred.
Practical Protection Measures During Wet Months
The following measures are most effective when implemented at the start of each monsoon season rather than after problems have appeared:
- Run a dehumidifier — a dehumidifier is the single most effective tool for sofa protection during monsoon season. Target an indoor relative humidity of 55–65%. Place the unit in the living room where the sofa is located. Empty the tank daily during peak monsoon weeks.
- Keep the aircon running on dry mode — most Singapore aircon units have a “dry” or “dehumidify” mode that removes moisture without dropping the temperature significantly. Run this mode for a few hours on wet afternoons even if you are not hot.
- Pull the sofa away from walls — leave at least 10 cm of space between the back of the sofa and the wall. Walls retain moisture and provide a cool surface against which humid air condenses. Contact between the sofa’s back fabric and a damp wall accelerates mould growth.
- Use a sofa cover — a fitted, breathable fabric cover (not plastic, which traps moisture) reduces the amount of airborne moisture absorbed by the upholstery during monsoon months. Remove and wash it regularly.
- Increase cushion rotation frequency — flip and rotate seat cushions weekly during monsoon season to prevent moisture from concentrating in one area and to expose all surfaces to airflow.

What to Do If Your Sofa Already Has Mould
If you discover mould on your sofa upholstery — identified by discolouration (often white, grey, or black) combined with a musty smell — act promptly:
- Move the sofa to a well-ventilated area or use a fan to increase airflow immediately.
- Do not brush dry mould — this releases spores into the air. Instead, gently blot the affected area with a cloth dampened with a diluted white vinegar solution (equal parts vinegar and water).
- Allow to dry completely with a fan before using the sofa again.
- For any mould that covers more than a small patch, or for mould that has penetrated the fabric and is visible on the foam beneath, seek professional cleaning immediately.
Attempting to clean widespread mould yourself with home products risks spreading spores, damaging the fabric with over-wetting, and failing to eliminate the mould root structure that lives beneath the surface. Professional sofa cleaning uses industrial-grade sanitisers and controlled moisture extraction to remove mould safely without causing further damage to the upholstery.
