Singapore’s average relative humidity hovers between 70% and 90%, and inside an enclosed HDB bedroom it climbs even higher overnight. Those conditions are perfect for mould, which only needs humidity above 60% and a touch of organic matter such as skin cells or sweat to colonise a mattress. Left unchecked, mould causes black and green staining, a musty odour that refuses to wash out, and respiratory symptoms that range from persistent coughs to full asthma flare-ups.
Why Mould Starts Inside the Mattress
Most people assume mould begins on the surface and spreads inwards. In reality the opposite is true. Warm bodies release about half a litre of moisture each night. That water vapour travels downward through bedding and settles in the cool underside of the mattress, where it meets the mattress base, divan or bed slats. If air cannot circulate underneath, the moisture has nowhere to go. Within weeks you get tell-tale black dots on the underside that eventually push through to the sleeping surface.
Memory foam and latex are particularly vulnerable because their dense cell structure traps moisture longer than an open-coil spring mattress. Mattresses placed directly on the floor, common in studio apartments and children’s rooms, have the highest mould risk of any setup.
Prevention Habits That Work
Mould prevention in Singapore is a layered defence. No single habit is enough on its own, but combining several makes the difference:
- Use a slatted bed frame with gaps of at least 5cm to allow air to circulate beneath the mattress.
- Never place a mattress directly on tile or vinyl flooring. If floor storage is unavoidable, stand the mattress upright daily.
- Air the mattress weekly. Strip the bed, open the windows and let it breathe for at least two hours on a dry day.
- Run the aircon or a dehumidifier to keep bedroom humidity below 55% whenever the room is occupied.
- Rotate the mattress every month so that any trapped moisture has a chance to evaporate from both sides.
- Use a breathable waterproof protector rather than a plastic cover, which traps sweat.
Early Warning Signs
Catch mould early and you can usually save the mattress. Late detection almost always means replacement. Check monthly for:
- Dark speckles or greenish patches on the underside or seams.
- A musty smell that persists after changing sheets and airing the room.
- Unexplained sneezing, itchy eyes or skin irritation only in the bedroom.
- Condensation on the bed frame or under the mattress in the morning.
- Wallpaper or paint bubbling on the wall nearest the bed, a sign that bedroom humidity is out of control.
What to Do If You Spot Mould
Small patches of surface mould, smaller than a palm, can sometimes be treated. Mix one part white vinegar with three parts water, lightly spray the area, leave for 20 minutes and blot dry. Then vacuum with a HEPA filter. Never use bleach on a mattress because it damages fibres and leaves toxic residue close to your face.
If the mould covers more than a small patch, has penetrated the foam or keeps returning, professional intervention is the only safe option. Our mattress cleaning service uses antifungal treatments and UV-C sterilisation that neutralise spores down to the mattress core. If the same bedroom includes upholstered furniture, a combined sofa cleaning visit prevents the mould from simply migrating to the nearest fabric surface.
When Replacement Is the Only Option
Some mould situations cannot be rescued. If mould has penetrated the foam core rather than the surface, if the mattress smells musty within days of professional cleaning, or if anyone in the household has developed unexplained respiratory symptoms, replacement is safer than repeated treatments. Dispose of the old mattress carefully so the spores do not contaminate the rest of your home during transit, and organise professional cleaning of the bed frame, surrounding walls and nearby soft furnishings before installing the new mattress. Starting fresh on contaminated bedding only shortens the lifespan of the replacement.
