Post-Haze Cleaning: Restoring Your Home After Smog Days

Haze season in Singapore arrives with little warning. The PSI climbs, masks come back out, and most of us close every window we can and hope it passes quickly. What many people do not realise is that even with windows shut, fine particulate still finds its way in through door gaps, through kitchen exhausts, and on the clothes of everyone who comes home. When the haze lifts and the air outside looks clean again, your sofa, curtains, mattress, and HVAC filters have quietly absorbed a week of pollution. This guide covers what to do in the first weekend after a haze episode, and why it matters more than a surface wipe.

What haze leaves behind

The particulate in regional haze is predominantly PM2.5, meaning particles under 2.5 microns across. They are small enough to penetrate deep into the lungs, and small enough to settle into the pile of a carpet, the weave of a cotton curtain, or the foam of a mattress. Haze particulate also tends to be oily, because it includes unburnt hydrocarbons from forest fires. That is why it leaves a slight yellowing on white surfaces and why a quick dust-down often just smears it around.

If you or anyone in your home has felt a lingering scratchy throat or a dry cough for the week after the haze cleared, the particulate you brought indoors is almost certainly still in your soft furnishings.

The post-haze recovery plan

  1. Change your air-con filters. Even the basic fibre filters behind a residential split unit should be rinsed after any significant haze event. If you have upgraded to a HEPA-grade filter, check the manufacturer’s replacement interval.
  2. Wipe every hard horizontal surface with a damp microfibre cloth. Dry dusting just aerosolises what has settled.
  3. Vacuum all floor coverings with a HEPA filter vacuum, including under furniture. Skirting boards are a common missed spot.
  4. Wash all bedding, throws, and cushion covers. Pillowcases in particular trap airborne particulate that you then breathe in for eight hours a night.
  5. Run a HEPA air purifier for a full weekend on the highest setting tolerable. This captures the particulate you disturbed during cleaning.

Curtains are the biggest reservoir

Nothing in a typical Singapore flat catches haze particulate like curtains and blinds. They sit right at the air gap around the window, they are usually woven fabrics with a large surface area, and most of us wash them rarely. After a moderate or severe haze event, we strongly recommend booking a curtain cleaning visit. Our team takes the fabric down, treats it on-site or in our facility depending on the drop, and rehangs it the same day.

Do not forget upholstery and mattresses

Sofas act like a second filter during haze days, because anyone sitting on them is exhaling the particulate they inhaled on the way home. By the end of a week you have a measurable load in the foam. A hot-water extraction sofa cleaning session removes the bulk of it. Mattress cleaning deserves the same treatment for any allergy-sensitive family member, particularly children.

Light-touch recovery vs. full reset

  • Light touch (after a short, low-PSI episode): filter change, full vacuum, wash bedding, run the air purifier.
  • Full reset (after a sustained haze above 150 PSI): everything above plus professional curtain, sofa, and carpet cleaning within two weeks.

Planning ahead for next time

Haze is unpredictable but not unusual. Keep a small stock of spare filters, a box of N95 masks, and the contact for a cleaning company you trust. If your child or parent is respiratory-sensitive, add an always-on HEPA purifier to the bedroom before the next season arrives.

When the air clears and you are ready to reset your home, UltraRevive offers a post-haze package that covers curtains, sofa, and mattress in one visit. Contact us through the site, call +65 9623 6261, or email hello@ultrarevive.sg, and we will prioritise a slot during and after the next episode.
