Tummy time is an essential part of infant development, building the neck, shoulder, and core strength that babies need to eventually sit, crawl, and walk. But the playmat your baby presses their face against during those crucial sessions deserves far more cleaning attention than most parents give it. Babies drool, spit up, and — when in the early weaning phase — arrive at tummy time with food-covered hands and faces. The playmat absorbs all of it.
In Singapore’s humid HDB flats and condos, playmats that are not dried properly after cleaning become breeding grounds for mould and bacteria. The foam or fabric sits close to the floor, where dust, pet dander, and allergens accumulate, and where airflow is often limited — especially in rooms where the air conditioning is used intermittently.
Types of Playmats and Their Cleaning Requirements
The right cleaning approach depends entirely on the material of your playmat. Using the wrong method can degrade the surface, release harmful compounds, or simply fail to clean effectively.
- Foam tile mats (EVA foam): The most common type in Singapore. These are generally water-resistant on the surface but absorb moisture at the seams and edges. Clean with a damp cloth and a baby-safe antibacterial spray. Avoid soaking — water trapped in the interlocking joints leads to mould. Separate the tiles regularly to check the undersides and joints for dark spots.
- Fabric-covered foam mats: The fabric cover can usually be removed and machine washed on a gentle cycle. The foam base should be spot-cleaned with a diluted solution and allowed to air dry fully before the cover is replaced. Never put the foam base in a dryer — heat can break down the foam structure.
- Silicone playmats: Non-porous and the easiest to clean thoroughly. Wipe with a food-safe antibacterial spray, or lift and rinse in the shower. Dry completely before returning to the floor.
- Quilted fabric mats: Check the care label. Many can be machine washed on a gentle cycle. Use a mild, fragrance-free detergent and air dry or tumble on low heat. These mats can harbour dust mites in the same way soft toys and mattresses do.
Daily Sanitisation Routine
A daily wipe-down takes two minutes and dramatically reduces the bacterial load your baby encounters during tummy time.
- After each use, wipe the surface with a baby-safe antibacterial spray and a clean microfibre cloth. Use gentle, overlapping strokes to cover the entire surface.
- Pay attention to the edges and any interlocking seams — these are prime spots for residue and moisture to accumulate.
- Allow the surface to air dry for at least five minutes before placing your baby back on the mat. This is particularly important for sprays that need dwell time to be effective.
- Check the underside of the mat — if it is sitting directly on a tiled HDB floor, moisture from the floor can transfer to the mat. A non-slip mat or a raised storage position overnight can help.
Weekly Deep Clean
Once a week, carry out a more thorough clean of the entire playmat system.
- For tile mats, separate all tiles and clean both sides and all edges. Stand them upright in a shower or against a wall outdoors to allow airflow on all surfaces. Direct sunlight is a natural disinfectant and helps eliminate mould spores — Singapore’s sunny climate makes this easy to utilise.
- For fabric-covered mats, remove and wash the cover. Inspect the foam base for any mould spots — a diluted white vinegar spray (one part vinegar to one part water) is effective and safe for babies once the surface has dried.
- For silicone mats, a full rinse and scrub with mild soap is sufficient. Dry completely in a well-ventilated spot.

Signs Your Playmat Needs Replacing or Professional Attention
Even with diligent cleaning, playmats have a lifespan. Watch for these indicators that it may be time to act.
- Visible mould spots that return within days of cleaning — this indicates deep-seated contamination that surface cleaning cannot resolve.
- A persistent odour even after drying — this is often trapped organic matter in the foam that surface cleaning does not reach.
- Surface degradation — cracking, flaking, or peeling foam can release particles that are unsafe for babies who put their hands and mouths on the mat.
- Compression and thinning — worn foam no longer provides the cushioning or support it was designed for.
If your mat is a high-quality fabric or quilted type that has developed embedded odours or stains, a professional steam clean can restore it far more effectively than home methods.
