The instinct is to blame the pet, but the real issue is almost always dander that has settled into fabrics over months or years. With the right cleaning rhythm and a few strategic upgrades, most families can keep their cat or dog and still have a living room that does not trigger symptoms. Here is how we approach it.
What dander actually is
Pet dander is not fur. It is microscopic flakes of skin shed by animals in the same way humans shed. The allergenic proteins live in the dander, the saliva, and in cats, the urine. When your pet grooms themselves, saliva coats their coat and dries, and the proteins flake off into your home. That is why cat allergies tend to be more severe than dog allergies even though cats are smaller — the Fel d 1 protein is both potent and extremely sticky.
Dander is so light it can stay airborne for hours and settles on every horizontal surface, then works its way deep into upholstery, mattresses, and the pile of wool rugs. It also transfers to visitors on clothing, which is why a guest can react in a home that looks immaculate.
The weekly rhythm that actually works
- Vacuum twice a week with a HEPA filter. Ordinary vacuums can spray fine dander back into the air. A sealed HEPA system keeps it contained.
- Wash pet bedding weekly at 60 degrees. This single habit reduces allergen load more than any other.
- Damp-mop hard floors rather than sweeping. Sweeping aerosolises dander.
- Wipe hard surfaces with a microfibre cloth. The static charge in microfibre traps dander rather than pushing it around.
- Groom the pet outside or in a bathroom you can wipe down afterwards. Daily brushing catches dander before it spreads.
Sofas, mattresses and carpets: the allergen reservoirs
Even with perfect habits, three surfaces accumulate dander faster than anything else: the sofa, the mattress, and any floor carpet. These are the reservoirs that keep feeding the air in your home. A professional deep clean every four to six months roughly resets the load.
- Sofas need hot-water extraction with a pet-safe detergent. A surface wipe will not touch the dander embedded in the foam. Book a sofa cleaning visit if the cushions have not been professionally treated in the last year.

Keep the pet out of the guest bedroom for the week before, and wash that bedding last.
