Memory Foam vs Spring Mattress: Cleaning Differences Explained

Not all mattresses are cleaned the same way. Whether you sleep on a memory foam mattress or a traditional spring (innerspring) mattress, the materials, construction, and sensitivity to moisture differ significantly — and using the wrong method can cause lasting damage. Here is what every Singapore homeowner should know before attempting any kind of mattress maintenance.

How Memory Foam and Spring Mattresses Differ in Construction

Memory foam mattresses are made from viscoelastic polyurethane foam — a dense, slow-reacting material that contours to your body. Because the foam is a single continuous structure with no internal airflow channels, moisture is the enemy. Water that penetrates the foam layers can take days to dry in Singapore’s humid conditions, creating the perfect environment for mould and bacterial growth inside the mattress — often invisible until the problem is severe.

Spring mattresses, by contrast, have an open coil or pocket-coil interior that allows air to circulate. They are typically covered with layers of padding, fibre, or foam on top. This construction means they dry faster, but the fabric cover and comfort layers still trap dust mites, skin cells, and bodily fluids over time.

A third popular category — the hybrid mattress — combines pocket springs with a foam or latex comfort layer and generally follows the memory foam cleaning rules on the surface, while being slightly more forgiving with airflow underneath.

Cleaning Rules Specific to Each Mattress Type

For memory foam, the cardinal rule is minimal moisture. Never saturate the surface with water or spray-on enzyme cleaners at full strength. For spot stains, use a cloth lightly dampened with a diluted mild detergent solution, dab (never scrub), then blot dry immediately with a clean towel. Avoid steam cleaning — the heat can distort the foam structure. Baking soda dusted over the surface, left for a few hours, then vacuumed off is one of the safer DIY deodorising options. Even so, thorough extraction of embedded dust mites and allergens within the foam core requires professional mattress cleaning equipment.

The dense structure of memory foam (left) versus the open coil system of a spring mattress (right) determines how each type should be cleaned and dried.

For spring mattresses, you have somewhat more flexibility. Their open structure allows for slightly deeper moisture treatment during spot cleaning, and they dry faster when aired near a fan. You can vacuum the fabric surface regularly with an upholstery attachment — pay close attention to the seams and border, where dust mites accumulate in higher concentrations. Flip or rotate your spring mattress every three to six months to even out wear and prevent concentrated soiling in one area.

For latex mattresses (another common type in Singapore), avoid petroleum-based cleaners as they degrade latex. Use only water-based solutions and avoid prolonged exposure to sunlight, which causes latex to yellow and crack.

When DIY Methods Are Not Enough

No matter what type of mattress you own, DIY cleaning has clear limits. Surface vacuuming cannot reach mite colonies living 2–3 cm deep in the mattress. Topical sprays may mask odours without eliminating the bacterial source. In Singapore’s year-round humidity — typically 80–85% relative humidity — a mattress that has absorbed perspiration over months is a far more complex cleaning challenge than a simple surface wipe can address.

Professional mattress cleaning services use hot water extraction combined with UV-C sanitisation to reach deep into the mattress layers. For memory foam, specialised low-moisture techniques are applied to achieve a thorough clean without saturating the foam. Results include measurable reductions in dust mite counts and a noticeably fresher sleep environment.

  • Memory foam: clean with minimal moisture, no steam, no soaking
  • Spring mattresses: can tolerate slightly more moisture but still need prompt drying
  • Both types: benefit greatly from professional deep cleaning every 6–12 months
  • Mattress protectors are essential regardless of mattress type
