A blood stain on a mattress is one of the more common household accidents — a minor cut during the night, a child’s nosebleed, or a wound that re-opened unexpectedly. The good news is that blood responds well to prompt treatment, and even older stains can be significantly reduced with the right technique. The bad news is that most people’s instinct is to reach for hot water, which is exactly the wrong move.
Why Cold Water Only — Always
Blood contains haemoglobin, a protein that coagulates and bonds permanently to fabric fibres when exposed to heat. Hot water, warm water, steam, or placing a stained mattress in direct sunlight all accelerate this bonding process. Once haemoglobin has been heat-set into a fabric, it becomes extremely difficult to remove, even with professional-grade solutions.
Always use cold water. This is the single most important rule in blood stain removal, and it applies equally to mattresses, sheets, upholstery, and clothing.
Fresh Blood Stain Treatment
Act immediately if possible. Blot the stain with a clean white cloth dampened with cold water. Press down firmly and lift — do not rub. Work from the outer edge of the stain inward to prevent spreading. Change to a fresh section of cloth as soon as the one you are using picks up colour.
Once you have blotted as much moisture as possible, apply one of these treatments:
- Hydrogen peroxide (3%): Apply a small amount directly to the stain. You will see it fizz — this is the oxidising reaction breaking down the haemoglobin. Blot after two to three minutes, then rinse with cold water. Note that hydrogen peroxide can lighten some coloured fabrics, so test on an inconspicuous area first.
- Salt paste: Mix table salt with a small amount of cold water to form a thick paste. Apply to the stain and allow it to draw out the blood as it dries. Brush off and blot with cold water. Particularly useful for thicker mattress fabrics.
- Enzyme-based laundry detergent: Mix a small amount with cold water and apply to the stain. Enzymes specifically target protein-based stains, which is exactly what blood is. Allow to sit for ten minutes, then blot and rinse.

Dried Blood Stain Treatment
If the stain has dried, the approach requires more patience. Begin by gently breaking up the dried blood with a soft brush — do not scratch or scrape aggressively, as this can damage mattress fabric. Then dampen the stain with cold water to begin rehydrating it.
Apply an enzyme-based cleaner or a paste of baking soda and cold water. The baking soda acts as a mild abrasive and helps lift the loosened blood from the fibres. Allow the paste to sit for fifteen to twenty minutes before blotting and rinsing with cold water. You may need to repeat this process two or three times for older, darker stains.
Drying the Mattress Properly
After treatment, the treated area must dry completely before you replace the mattress protector or sheets. A damp mattress in Singapore’s humidity is a perfect environment for mould and dust mites. Use a fan directed at the treated area, or if possible, stand the mattress on its side near an open window. Do not place it in direct afternoon sun immediately — allow it to air-dry first in a shaded, well-ventilated spot.
Maintaining a mattress protector on your mattress at all times is the best preventive measure. A good waterproof protector can be washed easily and prevents any stain from reaching the mattress itself. Our team also recommends mattress cleaning every six months in Singapore’s climate to remove accumulated body oils, sweat, and allergens that a protector alone cannot prevent.
When Professional Mattress Cleaning is the Right Choice
If the stain is large, has been there for more than a day, or if home treatment is not lifting it, professional hot-water extraction — applied carefully by a trained technician — can remove what DIY methods cannot. Our mattress cleaning service uses specialist solutions formulated for blood and protein stains, with rapid-dry techniques to prevent moisture retention.
We also recommend professional cleaning if the mattress has not been deep-cleaned in over a year. Mattresses accumulate a surprising amount of biological material over time, and regular professional cleaning extends the life of your mattress significantly.
